Resetting the maintenance count (LJ4000/4050 printers) when the “Perform Printer Maintenance” message appears on the printers LCD panel

While turning the printer on hold down the item and value keys on the printer on their left hand sides. After a few seconds “resetting maintenance count” will appear on the LCD. Release the buttons and allow the printer to warm up as usual and the maintenance count will be reset to zero. Please note that this procedure won’t have any affect until the maintenance interval (ie 200,000 pages) has been reached.

Replacing the fuser

                                 Tools required: Phillips screwdriver

                                                     Small flat blade screwdriver

The fuser is located at the rear of the printer. Be sure to let the fuser cool down for 15 minutes before removing. Always remove the mains cable before changing the fuser.

1. If a duplexer (for double sided printing) is fitted remove it by lifting slightly up and then pulling straight back until it is clear of the printer.

2. If a duplexer is not fitted, remove the left hand and right hand fuser screw covers by pulling from the bottom of each cover (Photo no.1).

3. Remove the rear cover/output tray (Photo no. 2), by locating a hinge pin on either side and gently prying it out from the black plastic fuser chassis.

4. Loosen the 2 captive screws in the fuser assembly (these are retained in the fuser assembly when loose). (Photo no. 3)

5. Pull the fuser assembly straight out of the printer.

6. Slide the new fuser into position and do up the 2 screws, replace the fuser screw covers (if fitted) and replace the duplexer (if fitted). Replace the rear cover/output tray.

Replacing the tray 1 (multipurpose tray) pick up roller and separation pad (old style all black unit)

1. Open the toner lid and tray 1.

2. Remove the black plastic cover above the pickup roller by pulling straight out (Photo no.4), revealing all of the pick up roller.

3. Remove the pick up roller by inserting the flat bladed screwdriver into the blue housing and twisting it slightly until you hear a click. The blue clip pops open and this then allows you to lift the pick up roller straight up and off its shaft (Photo no.4). If you look inside the roller you will see that there is a short metal pin which fits in the hole in that shaft. (Photo no.5)

4. Do not replace the pickup roller until you have changed the separation pad. (To change the newer style separation pad with the white plastic surround, go directly to step 17)

5. Locate the black plastic cover just to the left of the pick up roller which is attached to the white paper tray you will see a sliding piece of white plastic which clips in to two places to the black plastic cover (Photo no. 6). Using the flat bladed screwdriver very gently separate these two plastic tabs until the white plastic attachment can be removed. It is very important not to bend the black  plastic tabs too far or they will break.

6. Separate the two parts of the fold down tray to gain access to the separation pad. The upper part of the tray (adjustable for different widths of paper) is held to the lower part by two integral round plastic pins which are located in a sliding groove on each side (Photo no. 7). If you bend one of the sliding grooves out very slightly it can be pulled clear of the plastic pin and allow you to separate the two sections.

7. Remove the lower section of the tray by sliding it slightly to the right until it slides off its three hinged mounting points (Photo no. 8).

8. Remove the remaining (upper) part of the tray by letting it hang down to its lowest possible  position and pulling gently downwards on the left hand side to release its pivot point and then pull the unit slightly to the left to release it on the right hand side (Photo no. 9).

9. Remove the outer 2 of the 3 springs under the separation pad support arm. by using the flat bladed screwdriver to push each spring down carefully (cover the area with your free hand in case the spring comes loose and tries to launch itself across the room!) to release its mounting under the separation pad (Photo no. 10) .

10. Release the two arms on which the separation pad pivots (nearest section to you) using the flat blade screwdriver (Photo no.10).

11. Push down the remaining weak central spring to free it from under the separation pad and then gently pull out the complete pad/arm.

12. Fit the new pad assembly by locating the 2 arms on their pivot points and locating the central spring under the pad.

13. Refit each of the two removed springs by inserting the flat blade of the screwdriver between the coils of the spring (Photo no.11) and then lifting the separation pad assembly slightly with a finger and carefully locating the spring on to its lower mounting point.

14. Compress the spring slightly and locate it onto the upper mounting point just under the separation pad. (be careful not to let the springs “ping” off and become lost),

15. Fit the new pick up roller being sure that the metal locating pin in the roller fits into the hole on the metal pick up roller shaft, and click the blue latch closed.

16. Refit the paper tray in reverse order to removal.

17.To remove the type with the white surround (see photo no. 4) insert the blade of the screwdriver where shown (Photo no. 12) and then twist slightly, the separation pad will come off its black supporting arm. Do not remove the three springs which are visible.

18. To fit the new separation pad locate it in position above its black plastic support arm and then apply gentle downward pressure until you hear it click into place. Be sure that both sides have clicked into place and that the pad is level and not raised on one side. Fit the new pickup roller ensuring that the metal locating pin is inserted in the hole in the metal shaft and click shut the blue latch.

Fitting New Tray 2/3 pickup and Feed Rollers

1. There are 2 paper feed rollers (grey roller with blue plastic inner section), one located in the paper drawer and one in the main body of the printer. Remove them from their metal axles by holding out the small retaining clip in the center of the blue plastic section and sliding from the shaft. When refitting be sure that the rollers have gone fully on and click into place (Photo no. 13/14).

2. To change the pick up rollers (4 semi circular black/grey rubber rollers with white plastic centers on a single shaft) you will find it easier to gain access if you tip the printer up on its left hand side.

3. The entire shaft with the rollers fitted can be replaced as a complete unit but we recommend that you replace each roller individually on the shaft to avoid having to remove the small return spring attached to the shaft which is easily lost. Remove each roller by pressing the white retaining clip(Photo no. 15) and pulling from the shaft. Press each new roller into place making sure you hear a click as the roller is fully seated.
